The historic district from the 18th century was built on the shores of the natural bay by fishermen from the Bastak tribe. Al Bastakiya is today a pulsating labyrinth of galleries, boutique art hotels, stylish cafés, souvenir shops and a showcase of traditional life in old Dubai. Al Bastakiya is ideal for leisurely strolls through narrow alleys that breathe peace as if time had stopped.

Dubai is a city with rich history and tradition, which you will immediately understand when you visit the historic settlement of Al Bastakiya. A cluster of clay houses representing original Arabic architecture can be found between the shores of the natural city bay Dubai Creek and the Al Fahid Fort.

Almost half of the Al Bastakiya district was demolished in 1970 in favor of new office buildings. Restorer Rayner Otter, who was interested in the history of old Arabia, tirelessly fought to preserve at least the remains of the original houses, which he later succeeded in doing. The costly reconstruction of the entire district was completed in 2005.

The ideal time to visit the district is in the afternoon, when the narrow alleys are flooded with shadow and at the same time the last rays of the sun.
