What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a time when Muslims around the world abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and other physical pleasures between sunrise and sunset. Ramadan lasts about a month and represents the time when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Its beginning occurs in relation to the Christian calendar always 10 days earlier than the previous year. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, which are the foundation of the religion. The pillars are the framework in which Muslims live and Ramadan is considered the holiest time in the Islamic calendar. It is a time for prayer, self-reflection, religious devotion, purification of past sins and focusing on Allah through good deeds.
Ramadan 2025: begins approximately February 28 and ends March 29.
Ramadan 2026: begins approximately February 18 and ends March 19.
Will Ramadan affect you during your holiday?
During your stay, you should follow certain advice and recommendations. Hotel guests are not expected to observe fasting, but everyone appreciates if you show respect to the locals and avoid consuming food, drink and smoking in public during the day, meaning outside hotels. In hotels, all conditions are created so that you can perform the aforementioned activities without restrictions, or in private. Especially beach resorts operate in free mode and therefore Ramadan should not affect your holiday experience in any way. In general:
- alcohol is served in hotels and bars only after sunset (approx. after 19:00)
- some a la carte restaurants may operate with limited service
- discos and night clubs are closed during Ramadan
The end of fasting is announced every day by a call from the mosque at sunset. Cities come alive with unprecedented celebration activity, which begins with a rich pre-evening meal "SUHOOR" and the main evening meal "IFTAR". Ramadan is not only a month of self-denial, but also of joy, which culminates in the last days of fasting with the great holiday "EID AL FITR".
