The most interesting exhibits are certainly the giant water lilies and the palm called Talipot, which blooms once every 60 years and then dies. However, in the garden you will find hundreds of other species of various plants, including 85 species of palms, all different types of palms.
The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden (sometimes shortened to SSR Botanical Garden), commonly known as the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, is a popular tourist attraction and the oldest botanical garden in the southern hemisphere. Known for its long pond of giant water lilies (Victoria amazonica), the garden was first built in 1770 and covers 37 hectares.
Besides its giant water lilies, the garden also contains nutmeg, ebony, sugar cane and 85 varieties of palms from Central America, Asia, Africa and islands around the Indian Ocean. Many trees were planted by world leaders and royal princesses, including Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, Indira Gandhi, François Mitterrand and Robert Mugabe.
